We all know that in the U.S., it is practically essential to have a health insurance plan in order to get adequate healthcare when necessary. However, just because you have access to a health insurance plan doesn’t mean that you’re getting the best deal, or the cheapest plan. With rising health care costs, more and more Americans are looking for ways to cut down on health insurance costs without sacrificing any of the coverage.

No matter what the future holds for health care plans or for your own personal health, there are some tried and true things you can do to save money on healthcare. Take a look at some of the best tips to help you lower health insurance:

  • Smoking. Though you should definitely try to quit smoking for your own health, you may also want to consider quitting smoking to help save you money on health insurance. Health insurance companies can actually charge you up to 50% more for being a smoker! Generally speaking, taking care of your own health and trying your best to be healthy will ultimately save you money on your health insurance.
  • In-Network Doctors. If you’re looking for a new doctor of any type, try to find doctors that are in your health insurance plan’s provider network. Doctors who do not participate in your provider’s network could result in out-of-network charges that could easily be saved.
  • Deductibles. This may sound odd, but consider increasing your deductible every month. The more you pay out of pocket, the less you’ll have to pay in premiums! As always, of course, you should weigh the cost and the benefits with what you can afford and make the choice that works for you.
  • Prescriptions. Different healthcare providers will have different stances on certain prescription drugs. If you have prescriptions that you regularly take or rely on, you should seriously look into what kind of coverage your provider will provide for you with those drugs, and consider switching plans if you will end up paying more. You can also look into different manufacturer programs for your prescriptions– some companies will offer discount programs to low-income patients.
  • Broker. Contacting and working with a healthcare broker is a fantastic way to help you save money. Brokers have vast knowledge and a deep understanding of different health insurance plans, and will work with you to find a plan that suits your own needs and your budget. Plus, most of the time, you won’t have to worry about paying the broker to help you find a plan: they will make a commission from the insurance company itself.
