Health Insurance can be complex, and picking the wrong insurance package can be costly. Choose the right insurance package with the right medical benefits for your family based on these few guidelines, and you will feel more confident about your selection!

First, take a deep dive into your family’s medical needs. Consider the amount and type of treatment you have received in the past. Be sure to note the ongoing medical needs of you or your family members. Then, find out if the plan covers the required treatments or care. While it is impossible to predict every medical expense, your past trends in medical care will help you choose the right insurance package.

Second, find out if the plan you are considering covers your preferred doctor, clinic, pharmacy, and hospital. Most health insurance plans cover a network, a group of doctors, clinics, hospitals, pharmacies, and other health care providers. You typically pay less to access care or get your prescriptions from providers in your network because insurance companies contract lower rates with in-network providers. However, when you go out of network, you will pay a higher portion of the cost. So if you have preferred doctors and want to keep seeing them, make sure they are in-network for the plan you are considering.

Next, you will need to compare out-of-pocket costs. An insurance plan’s summary of benefits should clearly define how much you will need to pay out of pocket for services. The deductible, copayments, and coinsurances make up your portion of insurance costs. You might choose a plan that has higher monthly premiums but covers a more significant percentage of your medical expenses if you:

  • Have chronic conditions such as diabetes or cancer
  • Plan to have a baby or have small children
  • Have a planned surgery
  • Take expensive medicines
  • See specialists frequently

If you are in relatively good health and rarely seek medical attention, you might choose a plan with higher out-of-pocket costs and lower monthly premiums.

Through these steps, you will likely have narrowed down your plan options to just a few. Finalize your decision by looking at the summary of benefits for the plans you are considering. Examine the coverage for things like fertility services, mental health care, physical therapy, and emergency coverage. This final piece will help you choose the best health insurance option for your family.
